Smart Home America and American Family Lockup

Together with American Family Insurance, Smart Home America has developed the Resilience for All pilot project to help nonprofit builders in Minnesota/Wisconsin install FORTIFIED roofs over two years.

This project tackles the critical issues of housing affordability, disaster resilience, and insurance accessibility. American Family Insurance's commitment to championing dreams and fostering community advancement makes them a natural partner in our mission to build more resilient communities.

We aim to empower nonprofits to deliver safer, more resilient housing that withstands severe weather, thereby better protecting families in vulnerable communities.

What is FORTIFIED?

FORTIFIED is a voluntary construction and re-roofing standard developed by the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS), based on decades of research and testing.

It strengthens homes against severe weather like high winds, hail, and tornadoes, common in Minnesota and Wisconsin, by addressing weaknesses in conventional building practices.

The FORTIFIED Roof™ level focuses on the roof as the first line of defense, with upgrades including:

  • Sealed roof deck to prevent water intrusion
  • Impact-resistant shingles for hail protection
  • Reinforced edges and enhanced fastening to resist wind uplift

These enhancements can prevent structural failure during storms, reducing damage and repair costs.

FORTIFIED upgrades can be applied to new construction and re-roofing/rehab properties.

All FORTIFIED Homes are required to undergo a third-party inspection by a certified FORTIFIED evaluator. This is a crucial step to ensure compliance with the construction standards. Many evaluators offer discounted services to nonprofits.
