Communities can be affected by flooding in several ways. Floods can cause a great deal of damage to homes, businesses, communities, and infrastructure. Damaged communities can take months or even years to recover from a catastrophic flood.

Communities can protect their infrastructure and residents by adopting certain floodplain management measures. For example, Communities can join the Community Rating System (CRS). A CRS is a way to implement floodplain management strategies to increase public safety, reduce damages to property and public infrastructure, avoid economic disruption and losses, reduce human suffering, and protect the environment. Additionally, residents in communities that participate in the Community Rating System may receive up to a 45% premium discount on their flood insurance policies.

See The Community Rating System and FEMA Flood Protection Library page for more CRS information.

Additionally, other mitigation measures, like those in the infographic below, can be utilized like new stormwater management infrastructure, green infrastructure, floodproofing homes and businesses, and having flood insurance (homeowners insurance and flood insurance are DIFFERENT policies).
